On Friday, August 10th, 45 students from New Rays of Hope School had their first ever field trip. They went to the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre situated on Lake Victoria in Entebbe, about 45 minutes away from Kampala. We were so glad to be able to meet them there and spend the day with them. Most of the kids had never been on a bus before and almost all had never seen a lake. They were very well behaved, quiet at first just taking it all in. A guide gave them information about the different animals and it was so cute to hear them repeat back the names to her. The centre is a refuge for orphaned animals and it is sadly under funded and small, only 10 or 15 different types of animals but of course we have been spoiled with going to the Toronto zoo. I think the kids were most fascinated with the huge lake. Some of them wouldn't get too close but most splashed and ran along the edge. We took some time out to relax under some trees and the children giggled as we tried to learn some Luganda words and phrases. There was also a nice big playground and a few of the kids were brave enough to go on a donkey ride. Please view the slide show of our day at the zoo.
